What your result means

Final price is the headline: what you actually pay. Above it, discount amount shows your saving and price after discount shows the pre-tax subtotal.

Tax sits in the breakdown deliberately apart: it is computed on the reduced price, which is why the same tax rate costs less on sale items.

How the calculation works

  1. Multiply the original price by the discount percent for the saving.
  2. Subtract the saving for the reduced, pre-tax price.
  3. Multiply the reduced price by the tax percent, then add it for the final total.

Formula

Formula

discount = price × % ÷ 100; after = price − discount; tax = after × tax% ÷ 100; final = after + tax

  1. Discount (before tax)original price × discount % ÷ 100
  2. Reduced priceoriginal price − discount
  3. Tax (after discount)reduced price × tax % ÷ 100
  4. Finalreduced price + tax

Worked examples

    price: 100discountPct: 25taxPct: 8

    Result: Discount amount $25.00 · Price after discount $75.00 · Tax $6.00 · Final price $81.00

  • Example: $59.99 at 15% off, no tax

    Result: Discount amount $9.00 · Price after discount $50.99 · Tax $0.00 · Final price $50.99

Assumptions

What this calculation takes for granted — check these before relying on the result.

Assumptions:

  • Default values are an example $100 item at 25% off — replace with your figures.
  • Discount applies to the full price first; tax applies to the reduced price (standard retail ordering).
  • One discount only — stacked coupons are not modelled.
  • Blank tax means tax-free, not zero-rated paperwork.

Limitations

Why your real figure may differ:

  • Real checkouts add shipping, fees, and rounding that this page does not model.
  • Some jurisdictions tax the pre-discount price or exempt items — local rules win.
  • Buy-one-get-one, tiered, and loyalty pricing need their own math.

Frequently asked questions

Is discount applied before or after tax?

Before, almost everywhere: the discount lowers the taxable price, then tax applies to the reduced amount. That ordering is exactly what this calculator shows step by step.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $75 item at 25% off was $75 ÷ 0.75 = $100.

Why does 20% off plus 10% off not equal 30% off?

Discounts compound: 20% off $100 is $80, then 10% off $80 is $72 — a 28% total reduction, not 30%.

Any quick mental-math trick for discounts?

Take 10% (move the decimal one place), then scale: 20% is twice that, 5% is half. A $80 item at 15% off is $8 + $4 = $12 off, so $68.
