What your result means

Monthly commute cost is the headline: everything a driving month costs at current prices. Daily cost shows what each office day burns, useful for weighing one remote day a week.

Annual cost repeats the month twelvefold for salary-negotiation perspective; cost per person shows each carpooler’s fair monthly share.

How the calculation works

  1. Find the day’s driven distance, doubling the one-way figure when the return trip is included.
  2. Convert distance to fuel with your economy figure, multiply by price, then add parking, tolls, and other daily costs.
  3. Scale the daily total by commute days and weeks, then split the month across passengers.

Formula

Formula

daily = fuel + parking + tolls + other; weekly = daily × days; monthly = weekly × weeks; annual = monthly × 12

  1. Daily distanceone-way × 2 with return trip
  2. Daily fuel costdistance ÷ economy × price
  3. Daily totalfuel + parking + tolls + other
  4. Scalingweekly = daily × days/week · monthly = weekly × 4.33 · annual = monthly × 12

Assumptions

What this calculation takes for granted — check these before relying on the result.

Assumptions:

  • Default values are an example starting point — replace them with your commute figures.
  • Return trip doubles the one-way distance at the same economy when enabled.
  • Parking, tolls, and extras apply per commuting day, not per trip leg.
  • A month averages 4.33 weeks; holidays and remote days are not subtracted.
  • Passengers split the monthly total evenly, fuel and extras alike.

Limitations

Why your real figure may differ:

  • Fuel prices change frequently — recheck the price you entered.
  • Traffic, idling, and air-conditioning push real mileage below steady-state figures.
  • Parking and tolls vary by route, day, and policy; permits and monthly passes average out differently.
  • Manufacturer mileage ratings come from lab cycles — expect worse in congested commutes.
  • Wear, insurance, and depreciation are excluded; this is running cost, not total ownership.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use one-way or round-trip distance?

Enter the one-way figure and keep “include return trip” on — the calculator doubles it. Turn it off only for one-direction commutes.

Why 4.33 weeks per month?

A year has 52 weeks across 12 months (52 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33). Using 4 undercounts a real month by a full week of commuting over the year.

How should we split costs when carpooling?

Divide the monthly total by passengers — that is the cost-per-person figure. Rotate drivers separately; fuel already accounts for the shared ride.

Is working from home one day a week worth much?

Roughly a fifth of the weekly figure. At $40 a week, one remote day saves about $8 plus an hour or more of your time.

Why is my real spending higher than this?

Common gaps: traffic worse than your economy figure assumes, parking rate rises, uncounted extras (car washes, congestion fees), and price moves since you last checked.
